瀬戸焼は一人の職人の手によって生まれるのではありません。工程ごとに専門の職人がおり、いくつもの工房を巡ってようやくひとつの器が生まれます。そうした分業制のものづくりにおいて欠かせないのが、プロデューサー的な立ち位置の産地問屋であるNAGAEの存在です。
Seto-ware cannot be produced from a single craftsman. Instead, there are dedicated craftsman present in each manufacturing process, and after getting passed on to numbers of workshops, the product is finally completed. Division of labour like this must have a wholesaler like NAGAE who acts as a supervisior.
日本最古の陶磁器、瀬戸焼 /
SETO-WARE, THE ORIGIN OF JAPANESE POTTERY
焼き物の食器を総称して瀬戸物と言われるほど、古くから親しまれる瀬戸焼。愛知県瀬戸市でつくられる陶磁器を指し、1,000年余りの歴史を持つ日本最古の陶磁器です。多くの伝統工芸がそうであるように、瀬戸焼は型作り、生地作り、窯、研磨、転写と、工程ごとに専門作業を行う分業制で成り立ちます。さらに、型作りひとつをとっても「見本型」「原型」、実際に生地を流し込む「使用型」、その使用型を作るための「ケース型」と制作工程が非常に多いのが特徴です。たったひとつの器をつくるのに、これだけ多くの職人の手を介するということは、ものづくりを束ねるプロデューサーの手腕が、よいものづくりを左右することとなるのは想像に難くありません。
As the general term for ceramic tableware “Seto-mono” states, the popularity proves the long background of Seto-ware. Pointing out to the pottery that is exclusively manufactured in “Seto-shi” in Aichi prefecture, the artisan has the history of more than 1000 years. Similar to many of the other traditional crafts, the production of seto-ware relies on different procedures that are divided in each process. Each production consists of “mold making”, “layer making”, “baking”, “polishing” and “transcription”. Furthermore, “Mold making” itself subdivides into smaller processes It is easily imaginable that going through these entire processes just to make a single product explains how the skill of the producer directly reflects on the quality.

NAGAEは、分業の一端を担う瀬戸焼の型づくりをするメーカーとして事業を開始し、その後、産地問屋として手腕を発揮しました。現在では産地問屋という枠を超えて、海外のラグジュアリーブランドとの製品開発や、自社ブランド製品の製造、販売も手がけます。伝統的なものづくり産業が衰退傾向にあるのには、さまざまな要因がありますが、NAGAEのこうした取り組みは解決策のひとつといえます。旧来の役割だけでなく自らも製品を販売すること。業界外の人たちとタッグを組み製品開発を手がけること。分業制や手仕事の良さはそのままに、今の時代に即した新たなものづくりのバトンを繋ぐ仕組みづくりにも尽力しています。だからこそ双円というこれまでにない取り組みにも積極的に参加してくれているのでしょう。
NAGAE started off as a divided labour brand that is responsible for producing molds for “Seto-yaki”. After showing its skill as a local wholesaler, it now influences beyond domestic, but it collaborates with global luxury brands, whilst running its own brand. There are many reasons behind why traditional craft industry is declining, but NAGAE has certainly lead the whole industry to an uprising market. Not only fulfilling the job as a wholesaler, but creating sales of its own brand, collaborating with firms outside of its industry to develop entirely new products and creating latest systems for passing the baton for crafting all results to their never-ending passion towards “Soen”.
挑み続ける情熱に鼓舞されて /

磁器づくりの難しさは、焼いてみるまで仕上がりがわからないことにあります。型や生地づくりの段階では図面どおりに作ることができても、いざ焼くと、図面とは大きくずれることもしばしばです。生地自体の重さで凹んだり、焼成中に収縮したりと思わぬ結果の連続でした。そのたびに、どの工程までさかのぼり何を調整するのか再考が必要で、理想どおりのカタチへ到達するのに苦心しました。瀬戸の歴史が培ってきた職人の手腕により目指すゴールに辿り着くことができました。また、NAGAEの皆さんが根気強く調整してくださったことも大きいです。妥協したり短絡的なゴールを目指すのではなく、皆で繋ぐバトンの先にあるゴールを見据え導くことは、プロデューサーとして欠かせない要素です。
The hardest part of pottery is that the final shape is undetermined until the product is baked. Even if a mold or the material seems fit, the finished product may be largely out of scale. It was a continuous failure of unwanted product; material denting due to its own weight, or getting compressed by the pressure during baking. After each failure, the entire process had to be reviewed in order to derive what to adjust, and the struggle persisted. However, we were able to reach our goal, due to the support from the skill of the craftsman that has been building up for the entire history of Seto. Moreover, another fundamental fact is the endurance of people from NAGAE. Not going through shortcuts, but their immaculate team work to pass the baton to their goal is a must have motive for a superb producer. Resembling a passing of the baton.
